Malaysian Glove Makers Face Stronger Regional Competition

Malaysian glove manufacturers are facing stronger competition as Chinese producers expand manufacturing in Southeast Asia. The development is adding to supply pressure in the global medical glove market and making it harder for Malaysian companies to regain market share in the United States.

Malaysia is one of the world’s major producers of medical and disposable gloves, with established companies such as Kossan Rubber Industries serving international markets. However, Chinese manufacturers have increasingly established production capacity in countries including Indonesia and Vietnam, allowing them to serve overseas markets from within the region.

The change comes as the United States maintains tariffs of up to 100% on Chinese medical gloves. Despite these measures, Malaysia’s share of the US market has reportedly declined from around 70% to 60% in recent months.

The additional regional production has contributed to continued oversupply, keeping prices and profit margins under pressure. For Malaysian manufacturers, this makes competing mainly on high-volume standard gloves increasingly difficult.

Some companies are responding by moving into higher-value products. Kossan, for example, is increasing its focus on specialty cleanroom gloves used in industries such as semiconductor manufacturing. These gloves require tighter manufacturing controls because they are used in environments where contamination must be minimized.

The shift reflects a broader strategy among Malaysian manufacturers to focus on specialized products rather than compete only on price. As Southeast Asia’s electronics and semiconductor industries expand, demand for specialized industrial products could provide new opportunities.

For the Malaysian glove industry, the immediate challenge remains excess capacity and intense regional competition. Moving into specialized products may help manufacturers improve margins over time while reducing their dependence on the highly competitive standard medical glove market.
