Pakistan’s Record Current Account Surplus and the Real Challenge

17/04/2026 News Desk

The record of a current account surplus exceeding one billion dollars in March 2026 is undoubtedly significant and welcome news for Pakistan. For a country that had been grappling with persistent deficits for years, this development has, to some extent, helped restore confidence. Particularly around 2021, when economic conditions had deteriorated to the point where Pakistan appeared to be on the brink of default, timely financial support from friendly countries helped stabilize the situation. China, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates collectively placed approximately twelve to sixteen billion dollars in deposits with Pakistan’s central bank, providing a crucial lifeline. At the same time, the International Monetary Fund program played a key role in temporarily averting the default risk.

However, despite this achievement, the ground realities are far less encouraging. This surplus has largely emerged as a result of reduced imports, rather than any extraordinary growth in exports. This is precisely why uncertainty gripped financial markets when the United Arab Emirates signaled its intention to withdraw three and a half billion dollars. In that context, Saudi Arabia’s decision to deposit an additional three billion dollars provided temporary relief, pulling the economy back from yet another last-minute crisis. These events underscore the fact that Pakistan’s economy still rests on external crutches and remains vulnerable to pressure at any given moment.

What is urgently needed is a set of emergency measures aimed at achieving a sustained reduction in imports and a durable increase in exports. At the same time, it is imperative to plug all channels through which valuable foreign exchange is annually drained away. Estimates suggest that informal trade with Afghanistan and Iran, smuggling, and other illegal routes cause a loss of roughly ten billion dollars each year—an amount that is unsustainable for a fragile economy like Pakistan’s. Trade with Afghanistan must be regularized and made transparent to help reduce this loss.

The energy sector also cries out for reform. Projects reliant on expensive oil and LNG—particularly independent power producers—continue to place persistent pressure on foreign exchange reserves. If Pakistan seriously shifts toward local resources such as Thar coal, hydel power, and renewable energy, it can not only reduce its import bill but also achieve long-term stability. Similarly, establishing modern refineries in the country could yield annual savings of approximately four to five billion dollars.

Alongside this, industrial development is indispensable. Large-scale industrialization would not only provide import substitutes but also boost exports, strengthening the economy on a solid foundation. Economic ties with the United States, China, Iran, Gulf states, and Central Asian countries can be further deepened. Pakistan is strategically located on a major corridor that could host large-scale energy and trade projects. In this same context, initiating trade with India and Afghanistan could also open new doors for the economy.

The reality is that recent diplomatic and political successes have enhanced Pakistan’s global standing, but the real test now lies in translating these achievements into economic stability. The country and its people are currently under severe economic strain, and temporary bailout loans or deposits are not a lasting solution to the problem. If Pakistan seriously pursues reforms, industrialization, energy self-sufficiency, and regional trade, it can not only overcome the present crisis but also set itself on a path of sustainable development. This is the only way to permanently free the country from the cycle of debt and the politics of begging.
